Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia - Genesis of Indian Socialism & Economic Management!
Dr. Lohia created an ethical political system of services rendered both pre and post independence. His thoughts on socialism were to create an Indian version of socialist economy. His quest for equality and fraternity called for all round development of the state and its people.
An LU academic document on Dr. Lohia said-
"A democrat by conviction socialism appealed to Lohia as a way of life. He strongly advocated the plea that socialist movement in India should have a distinct Indian character. Lohia championed "the principle of equal irrelevance of capitalism and communism in respect of the creation of a new human civilization.“ This 'new civilization' is called by Lohia ‘socialism’.
Lohia says that socialism stands for equality and prosperity. In order to achieve it, it should rely on vote (election), spade (constructive work), and prison (civil disobedience). This new Socialism should principally aim at :
1. Maximum attainable equality;
2. Social Ownership;
3. Small-unit technology;
4. Four-pillar state;
5. A decent standard of living
6. The World Parliament and Government."
Lohian economic management is about equality of opportunity and all round balanced development for all its people. Proper distribution of key resources amongst all people for public welfare is key to Lohian economic thought.
Dr. Lohia as a parliamentarian was an outstanding intellectual and speaker and as a writer left a impressive mark on the next generations of leaders, thinkers and citizens.
